You Can Feel Belief
I was sitting in a wine bar watching the World Cup. Norway versus England. No sound. Just the game.
I had no investment in either team. I didn't know anything about them. No history, no stats, no storylines. Just two teams on a screen.
And yet, from the very beginning, I decided I wanted Norway to win.
Why? Because I could FEEL them.
I could feel their passion. Their fight. Their connection to each other. Even with the sound off, even knowing nothing about them, something came through that screen. It comes down to belief. They played like a team that believed.
Then I found out the story. Norway hadn't played in a World Cup since 1998. Twenty-eight years of falling short. Generations of players who never made it to this stage. And this team didn't sneak in through a side door. They won their qualifying group outright, undefeated, ahead of Italy... a team that was the European Champion just a few years ago. After 28 years of "not yet," they showed up believing it was their time, and it was.
Belief. Passion. Connection. You can feel it. Maybe you can't quantify it. Yet the power of a feeling magnifies and inspires.
Here's what I know after 25 years of working with leaders and teams: people can feel your belief the same way I could feel Norway's. Your team feels it. Your clients feel it. The room feels it. With the sound off. From across the field. Before you say a single word.
You can't fake it, and you can't “spreadsheet” it. Belief doesn't show up on a P&L. Connection doesn't fit in a KPI. But everyone in the building knows whether it's there.
And here's the other lesson Norway handed me. Twenty-eight years is a long time to keep believing. Long enough for most people to decide it's never going to happen, to lower the goal, to stop expecting. The question is never just "how long have you been waiting?" The question is, what do you do when your moment finally comes? Do you play small because you almost didn't make it? Or do you play with everything you've got because you're here now?
Norway played like they belonged. That's belief.
And here's the part I love most. Norway lost. In extra minutes, they lost the game.
But they showed up the entire time. Every minute. The fight never left them, the connection never broke, and the belief never drained out of them even when the clock was against them. I picked them before I knew their story, and I would pick them again after watching them lose.
That's the thing about belief. The scoreboard doesn't get to decide whether it was real. Some of the most inspiring teams, and some of the most inspiring leaders, don't win every game. They just refuse to stop showing up.
Can your team feel you?
Can they feel your passion, your fight, your connection to them and to the mission? Or are they watching a leader going through the motions with the sound off?
Because someone is always watching your game. And they're deciding, in the first few minutes, whether they believe in you based on what they can feel.
Belief magnifies. Passion inspires. Connection wins people over before they even know your story. And showing up, all the way to the final whistle, is what people remember long after the score is forgotten.
Play like you belong. Show up the entire time.
